Intel has stepped into the software bandwagon with the launch of its AppUp program which is an “app store” for Windows PCs, that allows users to browse a centralized catalog of applications for purchase or free download to a netbook or other personal computing device. The AppUp developer program also allows users to create, upload and sell their cool apps in the market. You can download the Intel AppUp center at http://www.intel.com/appup.

Being a travel enthusiast, the Travel related apps were really encouraging. The ATM locator which will help you finding the nearest ATM anywhere of 24 popular banks, is quite a handy app during travelling as you can travel without the hassle of carrying lots of money as also don't have to get mad searching for an ATM in the place of visit. You can download it here: http://www.appup.com/applications/applications-ATM+Locator

Then there is the weather guide which is quite a handy app during everyday travel, so you know about climate changes before hand without having to return with gloomy faces, if the weather is incremental.

Arrival Guide: It acts a good guide for travellers cruising through unknown places which gives you access to 400 destination guides. All of the guides are fully packed with restaurants, sightseeing, maps, cosy cafes, cool bars and clubs, sights, events and much more.

There are lots of other Major city specific guide apps too to help you in travelling those destinations. Just browse through the travel section to get lots of cool apps to ease your travel needs.

This blog is an entry to the "My Favorite PC App" contest. Check out numerous apps for PC/Netbooks available at the Intel AppUp Center. If you are looking for an opportunity to build and monetize your applications, check out the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Samsung has launched the all new Galaxy Tab 10.1 packed with the 'Honeycomb' film. There is a huge anticipation of the Tab 10.1, simply because it is packed with the Android 3.1 "Honeycomb" as well is versatile and have full flash support.

If we are to go by the look of it, first impressions are important for any new product. Galaxy Tab is 10.1-inches tall and makes the film feel wide in a horizontal position and the cool Samsung apps running on the big screen will make the user experience much better in reading e-books, web browsing and playing games.

Dimensions aside, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 's plastic back will feel softer and warmer to touch. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is lighter and is equipped with the Smart Cover, which adds a cold, metallic feel to it.

It is thin with just 8.6 mm and even light weighing just 595 gms making the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 the sexiest Honeycomb tablet we've seen and easy to carry too. Also, it has a 3-megapixel back camera and a 2-megapixel front camera, and powerful dual speakers which makes it all the more feature packed.
Samsung's new tablet PC is also equipped with one gigahertz dual-core processors making it fast along with 3G support, which is capable of up to 21 mb / s transfer speed. Efficient dual-core processor allows devices to keep more programs and browser windows open simultaneously, without impact on performance. So performance wise also its really cool

Overall it's almost the best tablet yet.

Chromebook: Under the Cloud

If you like your PC starting up the way your TV starts up then you're in the right place (well conditions may change according to place and situation but the official word is, it takes just 8 seconds for booting up, which perhaps is faster than your mobile phone too).

But beware this is not for the faint heart to begin with. Yes things are lot simpler but when you're grown up in a iron doors and Windows environment, surely a world without Windows will make you feel as if privacy is the last word.

For still wondering lets introduce one of the newest innovations of the web, the Google Chromebook, one of the first of its kinds and the second competitor to Microsoft Windows Operating Systems after the doomed Apple Macintosh OS, which is mostly seen in the heroine's lap in  movies and news desks in news studios. Google and Samsung have unveiled the “world’s first chromebook,” the Chromebook Series 5.

Chromebook promises to be a revolution of its kind where the user will be able to directly connect to the web without having to go through the layers of files and folders but beware it is something different to what you chew everyday and is still a evolving product, so expect the usual pregnancy problems.

If you live in Google Docs world, the Chrome OS is easy. If you’re used to saving docs on a local drive and going through folders you’re in for a rude awakening. With the Chrome OS you live in the browser window with no more poking around on an OS via file folders, start menus and application lists.

These days after the Mango revolution, its all about Apps folks, so whenever you face a problem using Chromebook, just search for an app and your problems will perhaps be solved for the features you are used to in the Windows environment. The Chromebook is designed to run everything from the Web.

The operating system presents the Chrome 9 browser as the user interface, with app icons in its main window. When disconnected, a Chromebook will use HTML5's offline storage capability to continue working in cloud apps such as Google Docs. Other HTML5-savvy Web apps will also work in disconnected mode.

The only way to run traditional apps on a Chromebook is through a desktop virtualization client such as Citrix Receiver, which will be available for Chrome OS. Citrix Receiver is widely used today on Google's Android and Apple's iOS mobile operating systems; Citrix clients are available for Mac OS X and Windows as well.

According to the Google blog, With a Chromebook you won’t wait minutes for your computer to boot and browser to start. You’ll be reading your email in seconds. Your apps, games, photos, music, movies and documents will be accessible wherever you are and you won't need to worry about losing your computer or forgetting to back up files.

Chromebooks will last a day of use on a single charge, so you don’t need to carry a power cord everywhere. And with optional 3G, just like your phone, you’ll have the web when you need it. Chromebooks have many layers of security built in so there is no anti-virus software to buy and maintain.
The Chromebook is also sleeker and includes a more vibrant screen. Here’s an overview of the specs for the Samsung Chromebook:
  • Size: 0.79-inch case, 3.3 pounds
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM, 16 GB SSD
  • Processor: Intel dual-core Atom processor of 1.66 GHz
  • Screen: 12.1-inch SuperBright Display, 16:10 resolution. Samsung claims it is 36% brighter than a standard LCD display.
  • Battery: Up to 8.5 hours of normal usage, up to 5 hours of video playback
  • Software: Google Chrome OS. Bootup time is less than 10 seconds
  • Peripherals: Two USB ports and an SD/SDHC/MMC card reader
  • Price: Wi-Fi.is slightly cheaper than the 3G version, which includes 100 MB free per month for two years.
The first devices will make their debut on June 15 on Amazon.com, Best Buy and other stores in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. Sundar Pichai, Google’s SVP of Chrome, revealed that Acer and Samsung would produce the initial devices. The Samsung Chromebook Series 5 will be slightly cheaper than an iPad, standard laptop or MacBook. But its hardware, speed and Chrome OS software will define its story among the masses.

Only time will tell whether it can compete to the likes of surging iPad and other tablets and smartphones, With Smaller, sleeker and faster the key and the concept of netbook dead, surely Google has some tough times ahead and has only itself to compete with for the time being but for one, Chromebook may well take cloud computing to the next level..

iPhone 5

Whether you love it or hate it, iPhone still remains one of the coveted gadgets for style-freaks. An iPhone in a hand perhaps gives the confidence that no other object in life can give.

Its one of the ultimate status gadgets these days and Apple continues its ride with it even with a selective marketing policy.  Although the craze of iPhone 4 is yet to settle down completely, rumors are already abound that iPhone 5 is already in the works and probably will go to the market by this fall.

As per latest leaked reports the new version will have a large screen with an aluminium casing. It will also support dual core processors and improved graphics cards for better performance. Expectation are aloof that iPhone 5 will feature Face Recognition Security along with improved battery life and support for 4G technology. The only thing that needs to be seen whether the marketing still remains the same or whether Apple decides to break barriers and tap un-charted territories.

...
Well to the heartbreak of many for an early release of iPhone 5, Apple has now introduced the new White iPhone 4 which has captured the millions of iPhone lovers, but it will perhaps prolong the release of the next version of the iPhone.

The full list of countries where the white iPhone 4 will be sold in the first phase is: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the U.S. It will be introduced sooner for other countries too.

Canon Powershot SX30IS

Here is a comparison between the newly introduced Canon Powershot SX30IS having fixed lens with high zoom and the Canon 1000D, which is a DSLR camera with inter changeable lens capability. The India price of the SX30 IS is some where around Rs. 28,000 - Rs. 30,000 and for the 1000D its is Rs, 21,000 - Rs. 23000.

Canon 1000D  vs   Canon Powershot SX30 IS

Canon 1000D is better

Size:                             126x98x65 mm          vs 123x92x108 mm
(30% smaller)

Sensor:                       CMOS                        vs CCD
(CMOS sensors produce better quality images)

Sensor Size:                APS-C 22.2x14.8mm vs 1/2.3" 6.2x4.6mm
(11.5x larger sensor)

Multi-Lens:                Yes                              vs No
(Interchangeable lenses can be used)

Shoots RAW:             Yes                              vs No
(More image control during editing)

Body Thinness:          2.6"                             vs 4.3"
(40% thinner)

Shooting Interval:      3 fps                            vs 1.1 fps
(2.5x faster continuous shooting)

Weight:                       502 g                           vs 601 g
(20% lighter)

Viewfinder:                 Pentamirror                vs Digital
(Pentamirror viewfinders save battery life and have more precision)

Exposures:                  30s                              vs 15s
(2x longer exposures)

Resolution:                 10.1 MP                      vs 9.8 MP
(Better images)

Powershot SX30 IS is better

Movie Speed:             720p @ 30fps             vs None
(Shoots HD 720p video as well as still pictures)

Image Stabilization:    Yes                             vs No
(Helps eliminate blur caused by small camera movements)

Flip-out screen:          Yes                              vs No
(It is helpful in taking movies or challenging situations)

LCD Screen:              2.7"                             vs 2.5"
(10% larger screen)

Now as you can see the Canon 1000D is far better than the newly introduced Canon SX30 IS, which is a point-and shoot camera that means you have lesser flexibility than 1000D and most importantly the price of 1000D is quite low (around 25% lower) than SX 30 IS. For the last four features where SX 30 is better than 1000D, the most important thing is generally with these camera you hardly take a movie having so many good cheaper handycams available these days and the 2.5 LCD screen is just perfect. In this price range category 1000D looks much more professional than the SX 30 IS, which is just a costly point-and-shoot camera.

Man in Space Video

50 years back Yuri Gargain created history and one of the most unachievable and the toughest things even till date, by venturing into a journey to Space. That even also marked a mad race to land in space by every country. And now to celebrate the 50 years of Gargain's maiden journey thanks to Christopher Riley, we now have a glimpse of what Gagarin saw from his spacecraft Vostok 1, through their work First Orbit.

While audio recordings of Gagarin exist, there were no video recordings. Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli,  recorded images of the Earth following a similar plot of Gagarin’s trip and these images have now been combined to the original audio recordings from Gagarin’s flight to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his flight, resulting in a stunning visual delight.

You can watch or download the youtube video here...

And here is a newspaper clipping when Gargain first landed in space and the US reaction thereafter:

Enjoy the space ride.

Internet Explorer 9 Update Download

Beauty of the Web: Well as per Microsoft their next iteration of its most popular browser Internet Explorer 9 has been termed as Beauty of the Web. And yes going by most reviews and number of downloads, it perhaps may be another game changer for Microsoft, just like Windows 7 scored over Windows Vista.

Microsoft released their Ready to Web (RTW) version and already the browser has seen more than 36 million downloads. And yes through the complete series of events right from the platform previews to the beta to the release candidate and now the release to web version, we have seen a completely new side of Microsoft, where it is interacting more with its users and taking their feedback to reclaim its lost aura back from Firefox and more recently Chrome.

Right from the User Interface to performance, privacy, security and integrity with the OS, IE 9 has have a complete overhaul and for once you will feel Internet Explorer being fast like the other browsers. Although Windows XP users will be disappointed for not being able to install it, Windows 7 users surely would be going to love it with its new website pinning feature to the taskbar where you can pin sites which you frequently visit and get updates without even opening the full browser window.

Other notable improvements include:

* Clean, lightweight, streamlined and compact user interface.

* Download Manager with ability to pause and restart a download.

* Tab page listing the frequently visited pages.

* Search option through the address bar with search suggestions just like firefox and chrome.

* GPU hardware acceleration to speed up video streaming or online gaming.

* Tracking Protection with some websites to help keep information private.

Facebooked

It is a facebooked world and why not! almost the major part of the world is hooked to Facebook after a few years of its inception. It has taken the world of communication by storm and made get-togethers, formal meetings history when in real time now friends, colleagues or any user can interact with their counterpart in real time. And the facebook tsunami is such that the popular joke going around facebook at this time is- Why do we love FACEBOOK but hate to FACE the BOOK.

And for those still scratching their heads, facebook is a social networking service and website launched in February 2004 with around 600 million active users at the beginning of 2011, when the world population stood at roughly 3600 million who were above 13, since facebook didn't permit users below 13 to have accounts and thats roughly 1 in 6 people using the facebook service and if we go a lit more deeply considering the number of 1200 million internet users over 13 then it roughly translates to 1 in 2 internet subscribers using the facebook service.

In all its popularity Facebook also owes a lot to the online farming game Farmville which took the world by storm which was exclusive only to facebook and this game attracted a surge of users with farmville having around 80 million active users by the end of 2010.

So its almost safe to say its a facebooked world. And the domination of facebook also led to obituaries for other social networking services like Orkut, Myspace and Hi5. Facebook also let to rest whatever little was left to the letters and Postal services as sending message through facebook was secure, instant and feedback could be obtained in minutes if not seconds.

Facebook was founded by a 20 year old Mark Zuckerberg while attending Harvard as a sophomore who used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the 'hotter' person" which attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in its first four hours online and on the way also made him one of the youngest billionaires in the world with personal wealth estimated to be $13.5 billion at the end of 2010.

And the surge of facebook also gave an opportunity for small and big companies as an extra cost cutting measure especially in the marketing and promotion space because in the flash of a second it could reach to millions of users and that too completely free and also getting higher quality feedback from the target group.

Companies took to designing of their logos, framing catch-lines and advertising through facebook and it got a better response through 1000's of creative minds rather than a few minds of an advertising company which it used to hire earlier and also was a cost-saving exercise.

After Email was introduced in the nineties, facebook changed the communication medium forever.

The Lost Apple

Apple Inc. have has been a global phenomenon after its launch of iPod in 2001 and the iPhone in 2007. It managed to create an almost style statement to hold a iPod/iPhone in hand and even its doomed Macintosh systems also got a new lease of life after Apple's new found fame. Today Apple products signifies with itself as something Cool & Chic.

Its all good but somehow Apple couldn't get a hold of the lucrative Indian market till date. India has been one of the important global telecom markets after 2001 when private participants were allowed into the sector and since then have been kind of a dream run, but of the pillars on which the Indian telecom market grew leaps and bounds was the Pricing and the product placing strategy along with marketing.

And this is where I feel Apple losed out. The real downer for me was their marketing strategy in India. For once we couldn't see Apple actually trying to lure consumers. They were more happy with the word of mouth policy where only the niche few would own it either as a gift or from someone of their American friends. Apple tied up with Airtel and Vodafone, two of leading names in the telecom industry but really couldn't make any mark in the Indian minds. Another factor I will guess has been the Pricing strategy. In a price sensitive market like India, we could not ever see any innovative pricing or promotion schemes from Apple.
The same applies to its iPod brand of portable music players too. Though it managed to create a complete new generation for music listeners on the move and iPod became the name of any brand of mp3 players but Apple iPod itself couldn't make much of a mark. Here also I would say the Pricing strategy and the promotion really has not been there.

And finally the last major ultra cool product from Apple the iPad could hardly make any mark in the Indian minds, better still the Samsung Galaxy Tab created a lot of buzz in this space. Apple had an early mover advantage and grab a pie of Nokia's share but somehow on the Indian shores, the Apple strategy still remains elusive. It could have created a complete new generation of Apple loyalists but perhaps it remained ahead of time. To sum it up just like what Facebook did to Orkut in India, Apple could have been the Facebook in India and stopping Nokia's onslaught.

Nano Car

Revolutions in India is not a new thing and not for the world too. But the way they happen and adopted here is absolutely different than anywhere else in the World.

Advertised as the world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano is a no-frills automobile designed by Indian conglomerate Tata to be affordable to millions, possibly hundreds of millions, of people who are newly joining the middle class in India and elsewhere in the developing world. With lots of hypes and expectations, this four-door car was made public in a festive mode.

Lots of public interests has been created for this much-awaited Rs one lakh car ($2,500) or the equivalent of a DVD player in a Lexus, which many think, to be instrumental in people’s dream to shift from a two wheeler to a four wheeler. Tata Motors has dubbed it as ‘People’s Car’, indicating its involvement to the people of root level. As Indians (and others) join the love affair with the private automobile, there is a huge prospect of Nano becoming a household term like Chevy or Mercedes.

It is a cute, compact car designed to appeal to first-time car buyers in one of the world’s fastest growing car markets. The car is the culmination of about five years of research and input from designers across the world. But it was ultimately designed and made in India, defying scepticism that an Indian group best known for its elephantine trucks could manufacture a cutting-edge product that would catch the attention of the best in the automotive industry. The whole car is about a single word - innovation, right from using aerospace adhesives instead of welding to its distribution strategy.

Initially though planned to be built at proposed Tata’s plant in Singur in West Bengal, it has been later shifted to Sanand in Gujarat. The launch of Nano is a valuable lesson for all aspiring entrepreneurs. The brand is a symbol of Vision. In a span of 10 years a dream has seen the light of the day. A starting point entailed challenging existing design philosophies about cars that they must be big, fuel guzzlers, very fast and extremely safe.

But it is also true that the car has fueled a host of concerns. With developing countries like India and China putting more and more cars on the roads, it has created a greater demand for fuel, contributing to sky-high global oil prices. All countries need to seriously rethink their transportation policies. Such an effort has to go far beyond the pursuit of alternative fuels and even beyond making cars more efficient.

Denser cities and shorter distances reduce the overall need for motorized transportation and make public transit, biking, and walking more feasible. Those who will never be able to afford a car will have more options instead of being marginalized by the onslaught of private automobiles. And the idea of such a low-cost vehicle has environmentalists petrified, conjuring images of a huge influx of cars, traffic jams at midnight, hours-long commutes and increasing pollution.

But saying all apart still the Nano would likely succeed in achieving one of Tata's goals, apart from making money, and that is providing an affordable means of transportation, which directly competes with motorcycles that dot Indian cities today.

The Nano’s obvious appeal, though, is not its pedigree but its price, targeting people moving up from the lower ends of India’s transportation spectrum. So, it seems that Tata Nano is going to rock the Indian roads in the days to come. If the car maintains its promised services, then Nano will definitely surge the streets of India with lots of people’s dream come true.

Nano will redefine the pricing in the Indian small car market. Whether the car performs or not, Nano is set to change the dynamics of an Industry. It appeared that if the people could not come to the car, the car had to come to the people.

Tata Nano Current Prices:

  • Tata Nano Base Model - Rs. 1,35,151
  • Tata Nano CX - Rs. 1,64,481
  • Tata Nano LX - Rs. 1,86,498

Behind Time

In all its developments and the global limelight hogging India, there can be no argument to the fact that India is almost 5 years behind by the least compared to the western nations or even some of our neighbours. In a country of billion people, where India once stood for invention and innovation, somewhere lost to the western world in this space and just remained another developing nation.

Yes India did have to face a lot of setbacks and turmoil’s in its last 1000 years of existence, but that doesn’t discount the fact that even in the last two decades we could hardly capitalize. Barring the IT industry we could showcase little to the world and even that also is slowly fizzling out with BPO remaining only the face of the once leaping IT sector.

Somewhere our dis-inclination to change is costing us a lot more than we can really feel. We have got used to a way of life with technologies far behind time. India for all its glory is becoming a dump yard of out-dated technologies and we catch on to that gleefully. Even in such a giant and thriving market like India, global giants are not showcasing their latest offerings here. Apple Incorporation is a case in point.

From telecom, aviation, military, nuclear, railways to hardware technologies, India is lagging in all the fronts. And interestingly the one’s shining in developing new technologies in the developed world are mostly Indians, who far one may have received the highly subsidised education in India but were forced to move out to work in challenging conditions. Indian research and development demands a lot more.

In all our self-pride it’s time we wake up from this slumber and embrace the world where today Speed is the last word and they live by it.
