Shopping List - City Markets, Harbour Bay, Nassau

I am a lifestyle voyeur, and I am fascinated by shopping lists of other people. It gives a glimpse into their lifestyles. Here is one that I picked up in Nassau.
  • 1 Juice
  • 1 Water
  • 1 O. M' (no idea what this is) -- detergent
  • 1 Joy (dish soap but would it be great if it was the human emotion?)
  • 1 Bleach
  • 2 Pineapple
  • 2 Chips
  • 2 Soda
  • 1 Soap
Drinks, snacks, bit of fruit and soap. Interesting.

Update: I have been informed that OMO is a popular soap in the Caribbean.

Another place, another time

I am not in the tropics. The north country beckoned for a long weekend, and a national holiday celebrating the birthday of a long dead queen. In a little town by the river, a piper pipes a newly minted bride and groom across the green sward in the shade of the stately maples.

It took me back to another time, to something that I lost somewhere somehow along the way.

Nosequatch -- Tourist Scene Tourist Seen XV

One day I got real tired of tourists taking pictures of me, so I decided to photograph tourists. After all, many of them are more ... shall we say fascinating than Walmart people. Thus my Tourist Scene Tourist Seen photo essay feature was born.

So we were out for a Sunday drive, and as we were in front of the British Colonial Hilton, the numbers of tourists on the street start to increase. I popped out my camera. I took the above photo of tourists as they were crossing in front of us at a cross walk. I didn't think nothing of the photo.

On closer inspection, I was amazed at the size of the schnozz on the woman. She has the biggest nose that I have ever seen. She is a candidate for the elephant ward when it comes to rhinoplasty. She needs a nose job badly.

There is some good news. It would be helpful when she has to inhale peanuts. And Lord help her if she sniffs cocaine. However each to his own, and vive le difference.

Right Place, Right Time, Camera

Today's blog entry is courtesy of a friend from Munich who sent me a collection of photos. The overall title is "Sometimes you have to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right camera".

This one hurts right in the manhood.

I hear that beer is a good skin cleanser.

Dogs always know who the bad guy is. Ask Cesar Millan.

This is truly the end.

Burning bush anyone?

This shot was taken one tenth of a second too early.

Friday -- The Dead Skin of My Life Today

In Bill Bryson's book, "A Short History of Nearly Everything" (scroll down for the Cosmological Cabbage Book Review ), he tells of how the human being is loaded with scads and scads of dead skin and it falls off every day feeding a plethora of mites and small bugs.

Like dead skin, these are the bits falling of my life this Friday morning. First of all, Sheryl Crow is coming to the Bahamas. If the price of admission is not the equivalent of a few carats of brilliant diamonds, I think that I will go. When cyclist and Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong was dating Sheryl, I thought that he was lucky to park his bike in her rack.

Secondly, I came across the rat trap pictured below on Paradise Island. It was empty of it's poisoned bait. I was worried about what ate all of the poison. The only thing that rat poison doesn't hurt, is rats. They use it as a digestive and a spice.

And I couldn't help but feel sorry for this lady who has lost her dog. One minute she was getting ready to inhale a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts, and the next minute her pooch was missing.
I guess the lesson here is that crack kills.

I was walking along Paradise Island Drive yesterday, and spied a smallish centipede that someone had thoughtfully squashed on the sidewalk. If you are allergic to their venom, they can be lethal.

And finally, I love the ingenuity of the ghetto fire detector.
So that is how my Friday is shaping up. It is just a usual day in Paradise. I have a luncheon meeting that could mean nothing, or mean that I have an incredible business opportunity in front of me that would be a dream of mine. It is just the dead skin of my life in the tropics.

Tourist Scene Tourist Seen 14 - On Incontinence

One nice thing about living in a tourist resort, is that one can go down to Marina Village at Atlantis, and listen to the live bands for free. When I take a break, I sometimes do that. I sit on the long, winding, white concrete bench in front of the luxury yachts, and listen to the band at the Bimini Road.

I had my camera with me, because a regular feature of mine on this blog is Tourist Scene Tourist Seen, where I turn the cameras on the tourists and photograph them.

So I am sitting there listening to the band when a tourist couple sits beside me. All of a sudden, I notice a yellow liquid flowing from out from under the woman, and down the white bench. I couldn't believe my eyes.

There are clean public washrooms all over the place at Marina Village, and yet this woman went when the spirit moved her. Then she got up and behaved as nothing happened. Your intrepid reporter caught the images for posterity.

I could not believe the audacity. One cannot Depends on the propriety of the tourists. Have they no shame?

The Slumbering Sailor

I was on the harbour bridge. Immediately below me was a mailboat called "The North Cat Island Special II". The back of this mailboat is flat vertical. The front of it has a ramp like a ferry to carry cars. In the back, there is an opening where the lifeboat is stowed. A sailor was settling down for a nap in the lifeboat. A perfect hiding place from the captain. I wouldn't want to be on that mailboat in an emergency. Look at the crates and junk in the lifeboat.

Today's musical offering comes from the oldest pop star in Europe.

A Music Critic

I took the above photo in Marina Village. The steel drum band was playing. I didn't notice until afterwards, the kid in the corner of the picture. Is he being critical of the music?

And speaking of music, this is my morning music today:

The Weary Kind

I watched the Academy Awards, and the winner for the Best Song was "The Weary Kind" sung by Ryan Bingham. It was from the movie Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges.

The song resonates with me, especially with the events of my life in the past couple of months.

Tourist Scene Tourist Seen 13

Just for the fun of it, I used to photograph tourists because they photographed me as if I were an inhabitant in a zoo.

I am going through my collection of specimens, and this one popped out at me. Look closely at the woman. She is carrying a huge white formal sun hat. At least this couple is wearing helmets. The footwear is kind of dodgy. I used to see tourists getting hurt on the time on rented scooters.

Tourist Scene Tourist Seen 12

This is my 12th entry in my photo series "Tourist Scene Tourist Seen". I was struck with the inspiration when tourists would photograph me as part of the scenery in Nassau. I would reciprocate by taking pictures of them. It has become an interesting photo essay when seen in its entirety.

What a Difference a Day Makes

What a difference a couple of days make. I went from this:

to this just by getting into an airplane.

I flew from the tropics to Canada through Philadelphia. As the plane crossed over to land in the Carolinas, everything looked okay. However the further north that we flew, the whiter the terrain got.

It is snowing lightly this morning. It is currently 30 degrees Fahrenheit or -1 Celsius. By Friday, it will rise to +5 Celsius or 41 degrees Fahrenheit. It is getting downright tropical. Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!

Sand and Moses

For all you tourists considering coming out to the Bahamas, the weather hasn't been that hot for the past week. It has been coolish, and this morning I woke up to rain. Now mind you, I had the window open (something that you can't do this time of year back home) and the cool weather and the sound of raindrops falling reminded me of being in a lakeside cottage in the boreal forest in summertime.

The ocean has been roily and wavy again. In the picture above, a tourist was mugging for the camera held by his girlfriend, and I snapped a pic of him as well. Then I used the i-Warp facility in an image manipulation tool to make him look like Moses parting the sea.

To show you just how massively roily the ocean is, it moves yards and yards of sand overnight. In the picture below, the ocean covered the last three steps of the beach access point with a few feet of sand. The next day, the sand will by gone, and the bottom step will be waist-high.
With action like this, the beach is different every day.

Tourist Scene Tourist Seen 11 -- The Generic Tourist

The weather has been cool, windy and "funny" lately. I haven't been swimming for days. Yesterday our walk on the beach was quite coolish, and the water was roily. The waves were high. I photoshopped a pic of Cabbage Beach:

But I do have an entry for my series of Tourist Scene Tourist Seen. This is where I photograph tourists instead of them photographing me as a resident of the islands.

The reason why the tourists below caught my eye is because they didn't initially. It struck me that here are avatars for the generic tourist. Mostly all of them look like this (except the girls in the swimsuits of course -- but that's a different story and if I start collecting pics of scantily clad nubile young bodies, the Lovely One will intervene. You can take the excuse "it's for my blog" only so far).

Rainy Day People

Presenting my photo essay on Rainy Day People.

Now, you think think that if I were going to put up a song to go with this photo essay, it would make sense to embed the song by Gordon Lightfoot called "Rainy Day People" but I won't. That would be too obvious.

Last night while surfing Youtube I came across a song called "Cherokee Morning Song". It is a native aboriginal song to the morning and it is beautiful. This is my song for this morning:

The Le Soleil Page

My friend Yves is from Montreal, Canada. He lives up the block from me on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. He reads this blog regularly.

During the Christmas period, we both were back in Canada. He had taken his wife for a little trip to a bed and breakfast in a beautiful remote region of Quebec on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River called "The Charlevoix". While his wife took a little nap, he popped in for a beer at the local bar and idly glanced through a Quebec City daily newspaper called "Le Soleil" or The Sun. On page 4, he came across a profile of this blog, the Cosmological Cabbage ruminating about the whereabouts of Canada's most famous serial killer. It was the last thing that he expected to see -- a Bahamian blog that he knew about, while he was vacationing in remote Quebec, and the story was written in French. He immediately emailed me saying that Cosmological Cabbage was following him.

Yves ripped out the newspaper page and brought it back to the Bahamas. It is pictured here. It is a small world.

In other news, last year in this blog I described my visit aboard a super yacht. I came across a picture that I took while I was aboard.
As a sign of the economic times, I am sad to report that the yacht was repossessed by the bankers last year. Even the luxury economy has its issues.

Ladies in the Rain

(humming .... ) if I were a painter .... Actually, I do paint pictures on canvas. The bulk of my work has been done in acrylics. I have experimented with water colours, oils and mixed media. However, I didn't bring my paints to the tropics, and if I did, there would be issues of finding the time. Swimming and spearfishing would compete for sunlight hours.

I was driving around Nassau when a tropical rainstorm blew up quickly. The traffic came to a standstill, and this is why I had the opportunity to take this photo from inside the car. Two ladies were caught in the rainstorm, and were using small towels to cover their heads.

Instead of painting, I used photoshop to render this as an impressionistic painting of a Nassau street during a rainstorm.

Tourist Scene Tourist Seen 10 -- Lady In Red

I watch the tourists. The tourists watch me. This is easy to do when you live in a tropical resort town. This blog entry is my continuing photo essay on tourist watching. I call it "Tourist Scene -- Tourist Seen". Usually the tourists are like WalMart people.

Today's entry makes the grade because she is dressed so classy. This is the Lady in Red tourist.

The picture below is that as she steams away into the crowd.

Tourist Scene Tourist Seen 9

My continuing series is Tourist Scene Tourist Seen. It is a photo essay depicting tourists. Normally tourists take pictures of everything including me in Nassau, so I am reciprocating and taking pictures of tourists.

This woman was waiting in line for a refreshment truck by the cruise ship wharf.
