If you are in the Bahamas -- Bahamas National Trust Meeting

If you find yourself in the Bahamas on Thursday, and are looking for something to do, you can take in this presentation by the Bahamas National Trust on a biological living treasure in the tropics -- Bay Rush or zamia lucayana. It is perhaps the only plant that is indigenous to the Bahamas.

A visit to the Retreat in Nassau is worth the trip alone -- to see the natural beauty of nature and the botanical specimens of trees and flowers.

Tornado Forms in the Bahamas

A tornado spout forms in Southern New Providence, the main island of the Bahamas where Nassau is located. It is unclear whether the tornado touched down, but it is highly unlikely.

Charlie Sheen in the Bahamas

After blasting the producers of his show "Two and a Half Men", Charlie Sheen took off to the Bahamas with a bevy of porn stars. He is staying at The Reef at Atlantis on Paradise Island. Residents are preparing for a "Sheen-icane". Hotel staff have laid in supplies of extra-strength bleach to clean his room.

Consumer Alert -- DO NOT BUY CIGARS IN NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS

My friend Yves is a cigar aficionado. We were idly chatting and I asked him about cigars and where he bought them in Nassau. He told me that most of the cigars in Nassau were fakes. It was shocking. Then he provided me with a link. You can find it yourself. Open a Google browser and type in "Fake Cuban Cigars in Nassau". You will get a whole bunch of references.

Cigar Aficionado Magazine has an article where they state that 95% of the Cuban cigars sold in Nassau are fakes. They are sold to unsuspecting cruise ship tourists who get off the ship and want to enjoy the forbidden fruit of a Cuban cigar. Due to the embargo, Americans are not allowed to possess Cuban tobacco products. They get off the ship, and immediately they are accosted by street hustlers, taxi cab drivers and others who offer to sell them Cuban cigars. The sellers have authentic looking cigar boxes, and the cigars have impressive bands. However, true cigar cognoscenti know that the details and size of the bands are wrong. Most of the cigar frauds are cheapos rolled in the Dominican Republic. Apparently one way to tell is if the wrapper has large veins (which signifies a cheap wrapper).

The illicit business is alive and well. I have been accosted on Paradise Island by people offering to sell me Cuban cigars, weed, crank, snow or sex. This is in addition to the fake Rolexes, Louis Vuitton bags, and fake luxury goods. There is also a thriving trade in pirated CDs and DVDs. It is the shame of the Bahamas, because the country is a signatory to the Berne Copyright conventions, and yet the fakes are sold right in front of the police directing traffic.

So if you like cigars, and are visiting Nassau and you want to try the real thing, where do you go? The only place that you can be assured of not getting ripped off is the Havana Humidor downtown and at Atlantis, and Graycliff -- a hotel, cigar factory and restaurant in Nassau. Otherwise your money will go up in smoke.

The Slumbering Sailor

I was on the harbour bridge. Immediately below me was a mailboat called "The North Cat Island Special II". The back of this mailboat is flat vertical. The front of it has a ramp like a ferry to carry cars. In the back, there is an opening where the lifeboat is stowed. A sailor was settling down for a nap in the lifeboat. A perfect hiding place from the captain. I wouldn't want to be on that mailboat in an emergency. Look at the crates and junk in the lifeboat.

Today's musical offering comes from the oldest pop star in Europe.

Freeport Tornado -- 3 Deaths and Many Injured

A freak storm, a tornado touched down and ripped through the island of Grand Bahama where the city of Freeport is located. The billion dollar container port suffered the most damage. Gantry crane #10 was felled. The two men inside were killed, as well as one on the ground. Scores more were injured. Here are some pictures.

Freeport is the second city of the Bahamas, and economically it is suffering. It still has not recuperated from Hurricanes Frances and Jean. This further adds to the woe and misery of that island in the sun.

Pictures From The Tropics Time

Photo time from the archives. Spanish Wells is a community and an island off Eleuthera. Most of the residents are fishermen, and quite well off. They fish to supply the Red Lobster restaurant chain with seafood. However, it is dry, meaning that the residents voted liquor stores off the island. Not to worry though, right across the channel on Eleuthera, the first think that you see at the water's edge is a liquor store to supply Spanish Wells:

This is one of the ferry from Eleuthera to Spanish Wells. There are (were) many.

Photo Essay -- Tropical Signs

While I suffer the slings and arrows of winter up north, I am posting a photo essay on signs in the tropics.

Let's all go to the Tropicana to banish the winter blues.

Never mind the rum cake, just pass the rum. Next door you can get a $1.99 breakfast to kill the buzz. A $1.99 breakfast consists of tuna and grits.

Just what everyone needs -- tings!

I think they all come in one car.

And finally, the last word in signs, from the Five Man Electrical Band:

Photo Essay -- Downtown Georgetown Exuma

After the second solid day of snow up north, I have decided to make my environment sunny and post a photo tour of downtown Georgetown in the Exumas. The Exuma chain is a mere 50 miles from Nassau at perhaps it closest point (I could be wrong about the exact mileage, but it is a rough order of magnitude).

The capital of the Exumas is Georgetown. It is a sleepy little town with not much going on. Here is my photo essay:

Above, I catch the town taxi stand at a less busy moment. It was a less busy moment for the entire day.

The "Welcome to Exuma" sign is posted at the town center. The building in the back is the government building and town hub (police, post office, fire, customs, courts, etc). Generally, any large building painted pink in the Bahamas is a government building.

The biggest thing that ever goes on in Georgetown, is the regatta. The judging stand pictured above is painted in the national colours of the Bahamas.

The city park on the harbour front provides a relaxing place to cogitate. However, as you can see in the photo, sometimes the crowds are hell.

Please patronize the local businesses.

And the Exuma sunrise on the Palm Bay is an amazingly beautiful sight.

All in all, if you want to get away from it all, and I really mean get away from it all, Georgetown is the place to go and relax. It has clean air and natural beauty going for it. You can catch a flight from Fort Lauderdale, or a flight from Nassau is just $70. If you have never been, you gotta go again.

Earthquake in Haiti -- Tsunami Watch For the Bahamas

I was preparing dinner last night at around 6:00 PM and I received a phone call at my Paradise Island home. It was our friend Monika. She told me to turn to channel 32 which is CNN in the Bahamas. There was a tsunami watch issued for the Bahamas. It was a chiller.

I turned on CNN, and sure enough it was true. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake had struck Haiti. It will be horrors and devastation. The loss of life, I fear will be horrendous. It is a huge catastrophe. Haiti is the bad luck story of North America.

There are many Haitians in the Bahamas. They send remittances back home from the mere pittances that they are paid here. Just yesterday I gave away a whole pile of shirts to our Haitian gardener who always has a use for them.

I was personally relieved that the tsunami watch was lifted shortly after it was issued. The Lovely One is still back home in Canada, and she wanted me to leave the country immediately after it was issued. Between the hurricanes, the earthquakes, and possible tsunamis, somehow Canada seems a lot more stable than the Caribbean.

Book Review -- Blood And Fire -- The Murder of Sir Harry Oakes

One of the biggest stories emanating out of the Bahamas ever, was the 1943 murder of Canadian mining millionaire, Sir Harry Oakes -- the richest man in the British Empire. The murder mystery managed to knock off World War Two off the pages of the newspaper. Sir Harry made all of his money by discovering the largest gold mine ever in Canadian history. To this day, officially the murder is unsolved. But Nassau being the tight community that it is, everyone knows who did it.

The author is John Marquis. He was for years the managing editor of the Tribune newspaper here in Nassau, and he has just recently retired. I have always admired Mr. Marquis, because he called a spade a spade. He revealed the corruption, the hypocrisy, the criminality of the political ruling class and the peccadilloes of the people in power who hoodwink the working classes every day in the Bahamas. Those people tried to get his working permit revoked and tried to get him out of the country, because he dared to put the truth in print.

I have always wanted to read this book, but at $39.95 (US dollars) it really wasn't worth it. However, recently a local book store was selling it at $19.95 and I relented and bought it.

Essentially everyone in the Bahamas knows that Sir Harry Oakes was murdered by his "friend", Harry H.G. Christie who went on to found the biggest most prestigious real estate company in the Bahamas that exists to this day. HG Christie eventually got a knighthood in spite of being an unmasked murderer.

What the author details in this book and adds to the knowledge of, is the complicity and the criminality in the cover up involving Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor and the abdicated King of England. The Duke gave up the English throne in December of 1936 for American divorcee Wallace Simpson. The Duke was sent to France with his new re-treaded wife, but they were an embarrassment to the British because they were frigging Nazis. To get them out of the way, the Duke was appointed Governor of the Bahamas for the duration of the war.

Oakes was murdered by HG Christie in association with a Walter Foskett who was Oakes' Florida lawyer. Oakes had just discovered that Foskett was embezzling and double dealing with Christie. Oakes was going to set them straight. Marquis the author contends that Oakes also had a stash of gold destined for one of his Mexican banks, and that gold disappeared after Sir Harry was murdered. HG Christie also got very rich after the demise of Oakes. When the Oakes will was probated, there was only $12 million dollars, while when he was alive, it was estimated that his worth was $200 million. There is speculation that Sir Harry converted a lot of his cash to gold, and it disappeared after his murder.

The book contends that the Duke of Windsor was of the belief that the Germans would win the war, and he started to illegally move his money into Oakes' bank in Mexico. This would be a felony as it contravened the war time restrictions of moving currency outside of Britain and her allies.

The Duke was also a friend of HG Christie -- who was also illegally moving money into Oakes' bank as well as screwing Oakes in property deals, all the while maintaining a facade of friendship. Just before his murder, Oakes became aware of Foskett's criminality, but no one knows if he knew that Christie was double dealing against him. This would certainly come out if Oakes straightened out Foskett. If Christie was unmasked as the murderer, the Duke's criminality and currency transactions were to be exposed. Hence the Duke was involved in the cover up of the murder of Sir Harry Oakes. The Duke went to great lengths to pin the murder on de Marigny, the hated son-in-law of Sir Harry. They even ordered the rope for his hanging.

The frame-up involving the Duke of Windsor never worked out, because the detectives that were hired by the Duke to frame de Marigny were caught out in court faking fingerprint evidence.

The book also contends that there was a string of mysterious deaths of people investigating the murder after the fact.

Even after all of these years in Nassau, the truth is elusive. The author contends that skewing and subversion of truth seems to be a hallmark of the Bahamas to this day.

Groom Lake, Area 51, Spy Planes and Me! The Aurora TR-3B

This is going to get a little weird, but I think that I might have seen for myself, evidence of the super secret new US spy plane. It is supposedly a flying triangle called the Aurora TR-3B.

I watch a lot of science shows and the Discovery Channel and I was always intrigued about Area 51 or Groom Lake. UFO sightings have been reported since the 1950's there. It is a known fact that the stealth fighter, the Blackbird spy plane and various other secret projects took place there.

During one of the television shows, they had an aviation expert who was shown contrails from flights originating from Area 51. Below is such an image that is freely available on the internet:

The expert explained that this was definitely not for public eyes yet. It was a new type of engine called a pulsed detonation system. This type of engine was not in production, and being tested secretly by the US. Apparently the detonation produces the scram jet effect. This was supposedly the propulsion system for the new class of super spy plane called the Aurora TR-3B.

I found this all very very interesting and thought nothing more of it -- until last Sunday. I was sitting up front on a boat coming back to Nassau from a successful spearfishing trip. The evening sky was gorgeous. I had my camera handy and snapped a pic of it. Then I noticed the weird contrail across the sky.

The contrail was interrupted by a huge cloud. X marks the edge of the huge cloud, and the contrail continued to the left (south) of the huge cloud.

On the other side of the cloud, the contrail was fresh, and the detail was disturbing. I immediately recognized the weird pattern from the TV show on Area 51 that I saw:

I zoomed in on it. It definitely was not an ordinary jet contrail.

Further magnification showed that I in fact was seeing the contrail of a pulsed detonation propulsion system. I was fascinated and snapped many pics of it. So the rumors of the Aurora TR-3B seemed to be true. It would be a natural to test it over the Bahamas. After all, there is already a military facility called AUTEC, and every once in a while after AUTEC activities, whales are found dead on Bahamian beaches.

The Aurora has been photographed in the UK at a test facility.

Below is a photograph of the Aurora on a test flight in the US:

The graphic below, is supposedly a schematic of the new plane:

I am amazed that while I was on the ocean, I would actually see the contrail of a pulsed detonation system that I saw on TV. And it was over the Bahamas. Strange !!!!

Jollification and Tipping

Oh the irony. Every year, the Bahamas National Trust has Christmas Jollification. I had never heard of the word Jollification before I landed in the Bahamas. I attended Jollification last year. It is one huge Christmas festival and craft sale. It is held in the National Trust Retreat which is an acreage in the middle of Nassau chock-a-block full of tropical trees and plants resembling a botanical gardens mixed with a jungle. I am a member of the Bahamas National Trust, and the weekend is always a blast.

In years past, all of the booze was free, and it was all you can drink. It was really a jollification. Last year and this year, the booze is still free, but you just get a taste. Of course, you can buy more, but the unlimited tap ended.

This year, I am not in Nassau at the moment, and missing Jollification. However, I am getting the cold and winter wonderland, something that never comes to Nassau.

On other fronts:

Cosmological Cabbage is tipping again with an big increase in blog hits the past two days. Thank you.

Peter Nygård's Private Cay in Bahamas Burns

Fashion mogul Peter Nygård owns a private island called Nygård Cay in the exclusive Lyford Cay area of Nassau Bahamas. Nygård Cay was one of the most hedonistic places in the hemisphere. Parties with bevies of fashion models, fueled by sex and cocaine, and the gathering of the glitterati were hallmarks of Nygård Cay.

Nygård Cay burnt to a crisp. Nothing of note left. He says that he will rebuilt.

Here is his Wikipedia bio:

Peter Nygård, is a Canadian fashion executive. Chairman of Nygård International of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, a company that makes women's wear. He has a park named after him in Deloraine, Canada. He lives in the Bahamas.

Nygård, owner of the Tan Jay line, has also captured international fashion headlines. Nygård is well known for his lavish Hollywood-style extravaganzas both in Canada, the United States and The Bahamas.

In 2003, his estimated worth was nearly 500 million Canadian dollars, which is under dispute.

Peter Nygård is 137 years old and all shriveled up.
