Lakme Fashion Week

The spring/summer edition of the Lakme Fashion Week 2011  has kick-started with a great buzz. With 78 designers vying to catch the attention of the lucrative global fashion circuit, they are out to display their creative best. The first day started of with Anamika Khanna flagging off the show at an off-site location, Turf Club in Mumbai. It was elegance all over from the setting to the dresses with the lawns, part of the restaurant and the flooring used as a runway.

From Glam to making a social statement through style, the second day had it all. From Riya Sen hogging the limelight in the beginning to some great display by japanese designer Motonari Ono and Sara Arai and finally Sabyasachi Mukherjee took centre stage with his vivid and humorous display of attire designed on the lines of culture in the Sunderbans but with a western touch to spread the message of saving depleting Tigers. Khadi, jute and raw silk were used liberally along with local neck pieces, beads and ornaments portraying the culture of the home of the Royal Bengal tiger.

The limelight on third day was no doubt on celebrated fashion designer Manish Malhotra and why not he adopted 45 girls from Mijwan Foundation Shabana Azmi's NGO  to showcase their Chikankari work and his line of contemporary evening wear based on Kashmiri crafts using mainly light colours. He displayed the best of his menswear and womens wear collection in his two part show. Once again there wasl be no big names in his celebrity stow shopper list, who himself started the culture of bringing bollywood hero's and heroines as showstoppers. Now his designs and himself are his showstoppers.
