Historical Movies Downfall

Off late world over somehow historical/period films or films made on real life icons are not much making a mark in the box office or captivate the imagination of the public at large. Movies of such genre have been produced since a long time and although they enjoy a huge run at TV in cinema they have fared like a mix bag.

It was a golden era even till the late nineties the audiences gave thumbs up to this genre of film-making but perhaps as lifestyles changed the world over with growing work hours and the internet taking over our lives, somehow we have got used to the light time-pass movies or comedies where we don't have to think, but just enjoy the movie in light-heart sequences. Period films would traditionally be showcased in lavish sets or will be of events which had a deep impact on our lives at a certain period of time.

Off late there has been a surge of such kind of films but if box office collections are anything to go by, most have a bad day their. So what’s the reasons behind the failure of so many films from Mangal Pandey to the Bose-the forgotten hero and to the very recently Jodha Akbaar in the Indian context and many others. None of them really got the popular choice rating behind them. Perhaps we are not much interested in watching the bio-graphies of our historical icons in celluloid.

Is it because, these days we have become too much fond of comedy or satire. Maybe today’s generation is so much over-tired with their history books in school, they don’t want to re-tire themselves by flocking to the theatres and get immersed in these mainly melo-dramatic soap operas. Or is it because we know about the main theme behind the scripts and we all know the stories from our history reading school days, or is it that the directors are failing to provide that something extra or something unique which will draw the audience to the theatres. There are question galore but with very little answers.

Although it must be said providing that something extra or he zing is not so much an easy task as we have seen if any miniscule aberrations are also provided from the scripts of the history books, there starts a hullaboo everywhere and the self-created guardians of our society rise from no-where to denounce those films. And none of the films mentioned above could prevent from their wrath.

Perhaps these films are too much original and lack the suspense or the spicy bits which add to the making of a successful commercial film or the creative freedom is a bit low. The budget of these films ranks quite high and there is nothing to doubt the directors lack of effort in these films as they have those delicate sequences and any distortion from them creates a lot of wrath, but somehow these films just get drowned in the glitz and glam of royalty and the halo that are behind the main characters. It seems lessons from the past were fine for school books but poison for seekers of escapist entertainment.

Perhaps today simplicity is the key any where we could relate ourselves more to the films by the lifestyle and the behaviours, maybe because the earlier generation lifestyle and slow 3 hour melo-dramas with lavish ornate sets, never-ending songs doesn’t appeal to us much now. They do have educational value but lack the bonfire that can inspire the vanities of the audience, accustomed to a weekly remix of romances, actioners and comedies.
