The Republic day is one of three major national events after Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti, which is celebrated in all parts of India irrespective of any particular religion, tribe, race, language or colour. It is celebrated on 26th January every year to mark the day when India officially came out of the British rule and the Indian constitution was adopted to become a truly Sovereign, Secular, Democratic, Republic.
On official note it is celebrated in every state capital, district headquarters and other administrative units. The National Flag is hoisted everywhere in offices, schools and educational institutions, residences, clubs and other places. In the national capital and also in state capitals grand parades are held in marked places where various Heads of the states as well as other important officials attend the programmes. In New Delhi, the President of India takes salute while the parade passes by him in Rajpath.
The parades are organised especially by different military units and regiments who take part in the march past with full enthusiasm. Various artillery and military weapons are also showcased during the event. A very colourful air show is also held during the event as well as other cultural events are organised to showcase the unique cultural diversity of India.
The republic day also reminds everyone, of the brave freedom fighters and martyrs of India who has given their lives in the freedom struggle and other succeeding wars selflessly to preserve the dignity and sovereignty of the nation.
The celebrations in New Delhi last almost for a week after which the Beating Retreat is held in the Raisina Hill in Rashtrapati Bhawan after which the army men who came from different regiments to participate in the republic day celebrations return to their respective regiments or units once again. It is held on 29th January after which the republic day celebrations come to an end. The Rashtrapati Bhawan and the administrative seats of the government, North Block and South Block is spectacularly illuminated with various light patterns to mark the occasion.
The beating retreat is also a very colourful and musical programme held in front of the president of India. The bands of the three military wings viz. air, navy and land perform in the event. The drummers play a beat which is known as the Drummers Call. Another popular and mesmerizing tune which is played every year is the hymn abide with me, and finally the most popular hymn the Sare Jaha Se Accha is played to the retreating steps of the bands.
The Republic Day essentially reminds us of the fulfillment of the pledge that was made on the midnight of Independence to a vision of India that we nourish, our duty to the nation, an acceptance of responsibility, fulfillment of promises as well as recapitulation of the achievements and to glorify our country in the entire world.
