Anandabazar Patrika

Anandabazar Patrika and the Bengali community in Calcutta, Bengal or even outside are quite synonymous. It is the most read Bengali vernacular newspaper by a long way and has maintained a wonderful balance between journalism and literature till now. It has played an integral role in nurturing the mind of the Bengal over the last seven decades or so.

Anandabazar Patrika was launched on the day of Dol Purnima (Holi festival) on 13th March 1922. The very first edition of Anandabazar Patrika of Kolkata was printed in red ink. This act of the Bengali newspaper was taken to be a very threatening event by the contemporary Englishman, which happened to be the mouthpiece of the British in India.

Anandabazar Patrika was a newspaper that played major role in the freedom movement of India. It shook the foundation of the British power in India. It helped to enhance the spirit of nationality among the people fighting against the colonial power in the country. The newspaper showed immense courage in stating the truth and for that, it never compromised with any injustice. It has always presented unbiased news and thus gained so much popularity among the common mass.

Anandabazar Patrika was launched as a daily newspaper to be brought out only as evening edition. Initially the paper consisted of only 4 pages. About 1000 copies of the newspaper were sold on the very first day of publication. Among the newspapers of the eastern region, Anandabazar Patrika has played a pioneer role to introduce offset printing.

Among the newspapers of India, the Anandabazar Patrika was recognized to top in circulation, according to the report of the Press Commission in 1954. Then the daily newspaper was published from Calcutta only. This newspaper is now published from many other locations other than Kolkata. From the point of view of circulation, among the Bengali newspapers, Anandabazar Patrika has crossed 1.2 million.

Other than the Kolkata edition, Anandabazar Patrika has introduced editions for other metropolitans like Mumbai and Delhi. Within West Bengal, the circulation of the paper is divided into 6 regions. Anandabazar excels in a key aspect of journalism, which is the coining of catchy, punchy headlines. In its entirety, this newspaper is a triumph of creativity and resourcefulness.
