Shahid Minar: Martyrs Memorial

The Shahid Minar in Kolkata was built by Sir David Ochterlony in the year 1948 to immortalize his astounding triumph in the Nepal War that took place in the period between 1814 and 1816. This skyscraper monument standing at approximately 48 meters enlightens the night sky of the Maidan region situated in the hub of Kolkata, as it is superficially illuminated by a dazzling shower of bright light from all its corners.

Shahid Minar literally meaning 'The Tower of the Martyrs', is indeed a spectacle to watch out for in this busy city of joy. It was earlier known as the ‘Octarloni Monument’ and in 1969, the Monument was rechristened as the ‘Shahid Minar’ to commemorate the Indian freedom fighters. Different political parties convene meetings, rallies and seminars behind the Shahid Minar at present.

The Shahid Minar contrived by a famous British architect JP Parker. On careful inspection one can easily conclude that there is an exquisite blend of Syrian, Egyptian and Turkish engineering in its construction. The foundation followed an Egyptian style whereas the body of the Minar and the dome resembled Syrian and Turkish designs respectively.

It has two balconies at the top. One can reach the balcony by using the serpentile staircase. 198 stairs lead from the bottom to the first balcony. From here 25 more stairs lead to the second balcony. But once you get there, the panoramic view of the city of joy is sure to leave you awe-stricken.
